In May 2025, Zimbabwe became the first country in the world to launch a national carbon registry compliant with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The registry was inaugurated by President Emmerson Mnangagwa at the SADC summit, with regional heads of state in attendance.
Terraviva designed the legal and regulatory framework that made the launch possible: the underlying national law and the operational rules governing project approval, credit authorisation and the distribution of community benefit. The framework was drafted to international standards from the outset, and built to integrate with the technology platform delivered by A6 Labs.
On launch day, the framework produced two further world firsts: the first official corresponding adjustment under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, and the first inter-registry transfer of carbon credits under the new framework.

The Zimbabwe registry was delivered in partnership with A6 Labs, whose platform operates the technology underpinning the framework. Article 6 readiness requires both legal architecture and operational platform. Terraviva and A6 Labs deliver the two halves independently and in coordination.
